A Hove Japanese Sanctuary
Centred on rest and ease
The Garden
This garden was designed to be a calm, naturalistic space inspired by traditional Japanese principles while remaining rooted in its coastal setting. The planting is soft and informal, with carefully selected species that create a gentle, layered composition and a sense of quiet balance throughout the garden.
Features
Reclaimed, authentic Japanese stonework is used to form subtle features within the plant-scape, complemented by natural pebbles that add texture and rhythm. These materials are intentionally understated, allowing the garden to feel grounded, timeless, and respectful of craft and tradition.
Wooden benching is integrated into the design for moments of pause, observation and connection.
As daylight fades, soft, low-level lighting brings warmth to the space without disrupting its tranquillity, enhancing the natural forms rather than dominating them.
A much-loved old tree from the previous garden, now passed, has been repurposed as a quiet natural feature, honouring Japanese garden principles that value age, continuity, and the beauty of natural change.
An Acer maple tree provides seasonal interest and a sense of warmth at the heart of the garden, while a traditionally pruned tree introduces a distinctive focal point. Its sculptural form adds character and quiet drama, creating a unique visual anchor within an otherwise relaxed and natural composition.
The result is a garden that feels both serene and welcoming - a thoughtful blend of Japanese influence, naturalistic planting, and sustainable materials, perfectly suited to a Hove setting.
